David Block’s arthritic back is acting up this morning as he enters The Lyndonville diner. As he enters he stops to take his boots off at the little bench just inside the doorway.

” I’ll be right bahk”, he calls to Miss Prudie, who has been a waitress at the diner for over fifteen years. He walks to his favorite stool as she fetches his morning coffee. “It takes me a woyil to get me boots off,” Block says as he lays his gloves by the wood stove.

She brings him the “Vermonter Special” without being asked.
